When translated in English, kakutei shinkoku means final income tax return. More than 95% of adults in Japan surely knows the meaning of kakutei shinkoku. Contrary to what most people know, there are two types of kakutei shinkoku -- one is for individuals and one for corporations. When we say "kakutei shinkoku", many assume that we are referring to the one for individuals because kakutei shinkoku for corporations is not so common for individuals.
Most people think badly of kakutei shinkoku because it is very difficult to make and we need to wait for the help of a staff from the tax office to make it.
In 2019, the system of filing kakutei shinkoku via smartphone was released. So now we have three ways to file kakutei shinkoku -- by smartphone, by personal computer and by writing.

When you need to file your final income tax return about the income in 2019, you should submit it in a tax office on weekdays from February 17 to March 16. However some tax offices throughout Japan open on February 24 and March 3 for the taxpayers who cannot go to a tax office on weekdays.
